Some Good Bits: It’s said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Turns out, the most important meal of the day can be a really personal experience; here are some personal takes we found via social this week: Real and Vibrant reinvents #Avocado, #Blueberry & #Mint; Plant Based Hawaii has us strawberry dreaming over this summer, breakfast smoothie; I Hart Nutrition sets the morning priorities – great coffee, healthy breakfast. (‘Nuf said.)
Read: While Tim Ferriss encourages us to train like a gymnast, I’m kinda feeling this ‘power gut’ thing. ‘Power gut’ may be synonymous with what a lot of folks refer to as “country strong.” And you know what I’m talking about. “Sometimes, you look at a guy in the gym and think: Huh, he’s got a bit of a gut — bet he doesn’t work out very hard. Then, said guy proceeds to lift a 1978 Volkswagen bus over his head with one arm while still doing lateral lunges.” In other words, don’t judge a book by its cover. Or – am I just finding excuses for being lazy?
Read: I’m reminded of Steven Wright’s story about a seemingly-useless light switch in his apartment and a lady from Madagascar, when I say… China called, and said “cut it out.” What? You’re recycling wrong. Just throwing something in a blue bin and hoping it will recycle won’t get it recycled. And it may do more harm than good. “Aspirational recycling” is a thing. Check your pizza boxes, coffee cups, greasy to go containers to see – wait… dirty diapers?! What!?! People actually do that? Check the numbers on materials you think might recycle against your local recycling website.
“Gah, enough with the Debbie Downer stuff… how ’bout a positive look at recycling?” Heard. This Florida brewery is making 6-pack rings that feed sea turtles instead of harming them. See, I can be Polly Positive, too.
EATING (or drinking) WELL
Read: I have a tendency to be wordy. I’m working on it. But one of the things I find in writing this thing weekly is that there’s a lot of info out there I want to read and share. For sake of brevity on these beverage pieces, I’ll cut to the quick. Coca-Cola isn’t really doing what it says with water. The world apparently wants more camel milk. And… cockroach milk? Now we’re making fake wine. Hospitals are trying to can sugary drinks. …actually, this last one hits home a bit. I’ve always been on the fence about milk. If raw milk is better than pasteurized, then why is it illegal in most states? Is it weird that we drink another animal’s milk, which is intended to fatten their babies (calves)? When I was lifting competitively and trying to eat very clean (read: strict on the paleo approach), the only way I could pack on those last couple kgs was via raw milk. And I wanted every bit of that extra weight. But, it also made me break out. #BrevityFail
Read: It’s a damn shame about Anthony Bourdain. My wife and I love(d) No Reservations and Parts Unknown. The latter’s theme song is in heavy rotation in my head. I’m sure by the time this gets posted that there will be more and newer info around the circumstances of Bourdain’s death. For now, I know that he was found dead (after apparent suicide) in a hotel in Strasbourg, France by his long-time friend, Eric Ripert. I used to use one of his stories about being prepared with my bootcamp clients (coincidentally, as it relates to setting yourself up for success in the context of nutrition). He was inspiring in his travels, conversations, discussions around food and drink. I will miss watching him visit places I’ll probably never see, eat things I’ll probably never eat, and meet people I’ll probably never meet.
Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.”
